Austin High School

Located in the heart of the city, Austin High School is the oldest continuously operating public high school in the state of Texas. Tradition and pride have survived seven moves around Central Austin since the school’s inception in 1881.

As part of the 2017 Bond Program, Austin High School received a full running track replacement; a new addition that supports the dance and athletic programs; and renovations to the special education, career and technical education, life skills and fine arts spaces. It was crucial that the addition and renovations complimented the rich history of the campus. The south side of the building features a new glass stair tower that lets in radiant light as students and staff go between levels. The tower was built with high-end flooring and vinyl graphics displaying the Maroon spirit.

The athletic additions include sports locker rooms, coaches’ offices and two dance studios. In order to create a larger space for Austin High School’s new competition gym on the second floor, the exterior wall of the existing dance room was removed. The wood from the previous competition gym floor was repurposed and mounted on the wall of a high-traffic hallway outside of the new gym. On the exterior of the building, metal wall panels were installed all around the outside of the addition, displaying a hybrid of classic and modern architecture.
