The modernized Govalle Elementary School, one of the first projects to be completed as part of the 2017 Bond Program, opened its doors on February 28, 2020. The school hosted a grand opening celebration to welcome the school community to the new modernized school.
The state-of-the-art campus is purpose-built to serve its dual language and Pre-K programs, as well as a life skills program. The school building is organized around a central open courtyard and main street that create distinct spaces for academics, fine arts and athletics. The two-story school incorporates two learning communities–each with 12 studios, one professional learning center, a maker space and small group break-out rooms. At the center and heart of the school is the media center. This area fuses together the two-story academic wing and the secondary active block that incorporates the gymnasium, cafeteria, and art and music rooms.
To commemorate this grand opening milestone, AISD TV created a video that showcases the new modernized campus and shares stories from those who helped bring the new school to life. Check it out:
With the new school officially open, construction for phase two of the project began in summer 2020. Phase Two includes removal of the original building to make room for a parking lot, open play field, gardens, a covered sport court and playgrounds for students and the community to enjoy. The final phase of the Govalle project is expected to be completed by August 2020.
It is so exciting to see the modernized schools come to life and we are looking forward to the work still to come through the 2017 Bond Program. Thank you for your patience and support as we work to create 21st-century learning spaces for all students and continue to reinvent the urban school experience!
