We also wanted to provide a project update on New Northeast Middle School. As part of the 2017 Bond Program, construction is expected to begin this fall and is scheduled for completion in summer 2022. See below for the latest progress on this project.

Since the community meeting held in June, significant progress has been made on the design of the New Northeast Middle School with more than 95 percent of construction documents now complete. Building permitting is moving forward on schedule, and the project is on track to break ground this fall.

Two Campus Architectural Team meetings were held this summer. The first in July focused on updates to the courtyard design, which include a large lawn to serve as a gathering space and an expanded learning staircase with bench seating. Landscaping was also a focus, as the CAT reviewed a plant palette for the school that will include a mix of shade and ornamental trees, shrubs and groundcover plants. Other updates included relocation of an elevator that will now provide more convenient servicing of the dispersed dining area.

In August, the CAT worked with the project team to optimize the school design in alignment with the 2017 Bond budget. The value engineering process always keeps the learner first in identifying priority design features. For the New Northeast Middle School, the CAT identified the media roof deck, additional basketball goals, as well as track and field lighting as high priorities. LPA Inc. and Joeris General Contractors have also been working closely to refine the sustainability of the school design, working toward a goal of LEED Gold certification.
