Brentwood Elementary Swing Space Update

As we continue to plan for Brentwood Elementary School to move to the temporary campus at Webb Middle School, we’d like to provide an update on the progress being made. We know many of our families are adjusting to virtual/continuous learning, and we appreciate your patience as we work through the city and state orders to stay home and work safe.

While AISD has closed all campuses for in-person instruction indefinitely to further prevent the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus), there is still work being done on the Brentwood modernization project and temporary swing space.

Since our last update, there have been multiple meetings between Brentwood Elementary and Webb Middle School leadership, along with AISD trustees, to ensure a smooth transition into the temporary swing space. Principal Laroche, district support staff and the Construction Management Department visited the Webb campus to go over the layout and site plan. We also held another Transition Planning Team meeting, which is made up of Brentwood staff and parents, to gather additional input.

During those meetings, we received great feedback that helped inform the layout of the portables for the temporary Brentwood campus. Below is the site plan that was submitted to the City of Austin for permitting. You’ll see it is similar to what was shown at the last community meeting. However, we’re excited to announce both the gym and cafeteria will each have more square footage than what those spaces currently have at Brentwood. Classroom assignments have not been made yet, but those will be shared before the start of the next school year.

Unfortunately, the move to teleworking has created a delay in providing additional answers surrounding after school care. We do know that Creative Action, Extend-A-Care and Kenpo Karate will have programs at the temporary space. However, we cannot determine enrollment capacities until we know what spaces can be allocated for these programs.

During the recent Transition Planning Team meeting, a group of parents volunteered to help identify other after school programs for Brentwood students to use next year. If you’re interested in helping with this effort, please email future@austinisd.org.

Today and every day, thank you for supporting our students as we continue to create 21st-century learning spaces and reinvent the urban school experience together. And, thank you again for your patience and support as we move forward with our important bond work while prioritizing the health and safety of our team members, students and community during this unprecedented time.

Thank you!
2017 Bond Team
