On November 4, Norman-Sims Elementary School held its grand opening “remix” celebration with Austin ISD leadership, students, teachers, staff and community members. Norman-Sims received a full modernization as part of the 2017 Bond Program.
What they are saying: “Going from planning sessions where we were laying out the vision of Norman-Sims to now being in the building where the vision is coming to life is surreal,” said Patrick Salinas, Principal of Norman-Sims Elementary School. “Seeing students use their new furniture and collaboration spaces […] is something that I’m in awe of because this once was a farfetched concept, and now it is our daily reality […]”
Highlights of the celebration included:
- Roll’n Da Dice Trail Riders and the Eastside Early College High School Drumline led the student parade.
- After the ceremony, guests were welcomed to refreshments and tours of the school. During the lunch period, students listened to music provided by DJ Joe and snacked on popsicles provided by Mom & Pop Popsicle Catering.
Why it matters: As part of the 2017 Bond Program, Norman-Sims Elementary School was selected for modernization. The 74,059-square-foot project began construction in the fall of 2019. The building was designed by Kirksey Architects and constructed by Joeris General Contractors.
- Norman-Sims Elementary School honors Granville Webster Norman and Mary Jane Sims. Mr. Norman was one of Texas’ foremost Black educators and a well-known Austin resident. Ms. Sims is best known for dedicating her life to children’s growth, enhancing their reading capabilities and cultivating young Black minds.
- A virtual ceremony was held in spring 2021 for the opening of Norman-Sims, hence this event was dubbed a remix, “So Nice We’re Celebrating Twice.”
