Austin ISD Celebrates 12 Green Building Milestones Through 2017 Bond

On October 18, Austin ISD celebrated achievements in sustainability through the 2017 Bond Program. 12 modernized campuses received certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and/or Austin Energy Green Building.

Why it matters: Sustainability was a driving force behind the design and construction of the 2017 Bond projects. It not only positively impacts the environment, but it provides a high-quality educational experience that inspires every student to make a positive impact on our world.

Yes and…Austin ISD’s green buildings have also been shown to significantly reduce energy and operating costs. Austin ISD now has 43 green-certified buildings as of fall 2022.

What they’re saying: The ceremony included a performance from the Ann Richards orchestra as well as remarks from Director of Sustainability Darien Clary, Principal Maria Narvaez, Interim Superintendent Dr. Anthony Mays and Board of Trustees Vice President Yasmin Wagner.

  • “Because of the district’s role as an educator, a steward of taxpayer dollars and a community leader, we are uniquely poised to enhance learning while balancing the needs of the environment, our diverse communities and the district’s financial resources through sustainability and green building,” said Darien Clary, Director of Sustainability at Austin ISD.

Of note: Ali Jensen, a 2022 graduate of Ann Richards, presented an electric go-kart project she created during her time at the school and spoke about her experience learning about sustainability in the modernized campus.
