Marshall Middle School
One of two new schools built as part of the 2017 Bond Program, Dr. General Marshall Middle School was built to serve up to 800 students in Northeast Austin. The campus offers the next generation of scholars a collaborative learning environment that honors the history of its namesake, Dr. General Marshall, prominent member of Austin’s Black community, mathematical titan and a tireless mentor to students in the math and sciences. Its mascot, the Rams, pays homage to Marshall’s prolific career as a professor at Huston-Tillotson.
With sweeping roofs and protective solar screens, the new campus is inspired by the previous Mueller airport runway, on which the site is located. The 130,000-square-foot middle school includes pedestrian and bike-friendly pathways and athletic fields that serve both students and the local community. Sustainability was a key factor in its design, targeting gold status in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and certification from Austin Energy Green Building. Its centerpiece is a central academic courtyard with outdoor dining, vegetable garden, outdoor learning stair, stage, large screened porches and an activity lawn.
The educational spaces cater to a wide range of learning and teaching styles, giving flexibility for students to work individually, in small group rooms, or in collaborative break-out spaces. The three-story building — unique for a middle school — allows each grade to have its own level and distinct identity. CTE and art rooms connect to a roof deck, providing students expansive views of the Mueller development and iconic air traffic control tower.
Dr. General Marshall Middle School opened its doors for the first day of class in fall 2023 with its inaugural 6th grade class and is extremely excited to see the campus grow and welcome more students in the coming years.
