Norman-Sims Elementary School
Austin ISD’s 2017 Bond called for the construction of a single, modernized elementary school at either the Norman or Sims campus. Norman was selected as the modernization site, uniting both school communities as the new Norman-Sims Elementary School. Construction began in fall 2019 and the campus was officially renamed in May 2020 by the Board of Trustees. It opened for students in January 2021.
The two-story school comprises 74,059-square-feet and features flexible learning spaces, ample natural light, outdoor classrooms and upgraded technology. These spaces allow teachers to effectively deliver STEAM curriculum and facilitate a more active, collaborative learning style that prepares students for the future.
The new Norman-Sims Elementary honors the legacy of its namesakes, Granville Webster Norman and Mary Jane Sims. Mr. Norman was one of Texas’ foremost Black educators and a well-known Austin resident. Ms. Sims is best known for dedicating her life to children, literacy and cultivating the minds of young African Americans.
