Doss Elementary School
Doss Elementary School is located in northwest Austin and offers a comprehensive curriculum with varied enrichment programs for its students. Doss received a full campus modernization as part of the 2017 Bond Program, increasing campus capacity to 870 students.
The vision for the Doss “treehouse” design was inspired by its location among the trees — and as the home to the owls. Throughout the design process, the Campus Architectural Team envisioned the treehouse as a playful, safe and exploratory environment within a natural setting. The administration offices at the front entry represent the solid trunk and foundation of the building. The dining and building services at ground level act as roots to anchor and support the functions of the building.
Doss comprises 44 studio spaces, two makerspaces and small breakout spaces throughout the building. Large areas within a cluster of studios allow students to collaborate and learn together. The multi-level design creates a large dining area that houses the learning stairs, which allow students to gather in one area.
